Honoring Pets on National Memorial Day

Sunday, September 10th 2023

Today is National Pet Memorial Day. Held annually on the second Sunday of September, it is an opportunity to celebrate and honor the lives and memories of the pets that have impacted us.

I’ve had the privilege of loving and being loved by dogs in my life. Each relationship is a unique connection and each loss has affected me in unique and profound ways. On this National Pet Memorial Day, I plan to take time to honor the memories and lessons that Clyde, Buddy, and George embedded in me. I plan to take time to look at pictures of them, share stories of them with my loved ones, and walk around their favorite places.

There are many different ways you can honor a pet’s memory. Here are some other ideas on how you can take the time to celebrate the lives lost:

  • Pot or spread some flower seeds.
  • Plant a tree in your yard.
  • Look at pictures and share stories.
  • Frame a picture or create a memory box.
  • Get a picture or painting commissioned.
  • Get a tattoo – you can even use ink created from their ashes.
  • Paint a garden rock and put it somewhere you’ll regularly see it.
  • Volunteer at your local animal shelter.
  • Donate goods or funds to your local vet clinic or animal shelter.
  • Adopt!
